UC Santa Cruz, Science Internship Program / Global SPHERE Network

For the last decade, the Science Internship Program at UC Santa Cruz ( has been engaging high school students in hands-on, authentic research in a variety of STEM fields. The high school students work under the close mentorship of university researchers: faculty, research staff, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

The Global SPHERE Network (, launched in November 2017, was co-founded by the leads of six successful high school STEM research programs around the country. The goals of the network are to: (1) increase the pool of researchers who mentor high school students and engage them in their research, and (2) increase the size and diversity of the pool of high school students who avail of such opportunities.
