Plate tectonics and you!

University of California, Los Angeles

Plate tectonics impacts the world we live in, learn how earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountains are created by molten rock deep within the Earth.

Plate tectonics is now a 50 year old theory that helped us understand why earthquakes and volcanic eruptions happened, where and how.

For years we were unclear on what actually drove plate tectonic motions. Today we now it’s the motion of currents of rocks in the interior of the Earth (mantle convection).

We will show demonstrations on how plates are created and destroyed and what kind of currents we expect in the mantle. Those same currents also create mountains and determine sea-level. Both the hazard and implications for sea-level rise are critical for all to know and understand.
